As I am reading this amazing book, "The Challenge of Affluence", by Avner Offer, I realize how important is for the managers of a Corporation, Firm, or non-profit, to have workers who are not only attracted by the salary and benefits, but who are also happy to be part of that work environment. In other words, employees who feel EMPOWERED.
Avner Offer talks about an "economy of regard". That is, not only a pure business relationship: I give you this amount of money and you do this work for me. But a relationship where the employees feel they can be themselves, and they feel they are accepted and cherished for who they are. The mutual regard between employer and employee is what creates the sense of empowerment. The result is a work environment with very little conflict, with no anger, with zero or little stress and with very few "sick" days.
